Students won Poster Competition

March 3rd, 2016

A research poster, entitled “An Interactive Web-based 3D GIS Platform for Estimating Urban Solar Energy Potential” and prepared by Wei Huang, Shahram Sattar, Annie Chow and Shishuo Xu, won the 4th place in the 2016 Graduate Student Poster Session held during the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS) 124th Annual General Meeting, 24-26 February 2016 in London, Canada.

The research is part of a 3DSolar project funded by Onatrio Centres of Excellence (OCE), Connect Canada and Woodstock Hydro, to develop an innovative web-based 3D environment for modeling and precisely estimating solar energy potential on urban rooftops. Using 3DSolar, users can explore 3D model of their rooftops, play and place the selected solar panels, and get instant estimation of the output of electricity generation, with other simulation results such as environment footprints (CO2 savings, equivalent tree saved, etc.).
